Prof. Widawski found inspiration in film for award-winning sheath dress

Threads magazine challenged the members of the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals to find garment inspiration from any art, such as music, painting, sculpture, architecture or poetry, for its 2015 design competition. The canvas for their interpretation was a sheath dress. Designers were asked to use seams, silhouette, texture and construction techniques, not just surface embellishment, to communicate their vision. Winners were chosen on the basis of originality and quality construction.

From 40 entries, 20 finalists were chosen. The winner in the best construction category is Wayne State fashion design and merchandising lecturer Susan Widawski who found inspiration for the sheath dress she made, Harmony pictured and described below, in aesthetics of the 1967 film To Sir With Love.
