Joy Colby: A woman of critical influence
by Michael H. Hodges

Members of Detroit’s art community are remembering longtime Detroit News art critic Joy Hakanson Colby as a reporter of uncommon influence, probing but fair, and a passionate advocate for Michigan artists. Colby, who covered Detroit’s art scene for 60 years, died July 2 in St. Louis after a brief illness. She was 88.

The Wayne State University Library System produced a Fall 2011 interview with Joy Colby in its Cass Corridor Documentation Project. The project is a collaboration between the libraries and the University Art Collection to document Cass Corridor culture from the 1960s to the 1980s. In her interview, Colby discussed Detroit art, the development of the Cass Corridor movement and her recollections of artists, galleries and exhibits.
