The passing of James Pearson Duffy

James Pearson Duffy died November 3, 2009. As Rebecca Hart, associate curator at the DIA, noted: "He was a passionate supporter of the arts and everyone associated with the creative world." In acknowledgement of Mr. Duffy’s generous gifts of art and a projected gift from his estate, Wayne State University announced on April 24, 2009 the naming of the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History. Total gifts (including those works of art that are now in the Wayne State University Art Collection) are expected to be approximately $4.5m. It was Mr. Duffy's desire to secure the future study and support of contemporary art and artists as they contribute to the education and training of our students. In reflecting on his great generosity, we can only hope to see other individuals so committed and supportive of the arts and artists of Detroit.
